  1. What is Love?
What is Love? No words can define it—
It’s something so great only God could design it.
It grows through the years in sunshine and rain.
In gladness and sadness, in pleasure and pain.
It’s ever enduring and patient and kind—
It judges all things with the heart not the mind.
And love can transform the most commonplace
Into beauty and splendor and sweetness and grace.
For love is unselfish, giving more than it takes.
And no matter what happens, love never forsakes.
It’s faithful and trusting and always believing.
Guileless and honest and never deceiving.
Yes, love is beyond what we can define.
For love is immortal, and God’s gift is divine.
Helen Steiner Rice

2. Dove Poem
Two doves meeting in the sky
Two loves hand in hand eye to eye
Two parts of a loving whole
Two hearts and a single soul
Two stars shining big and bright
Two fires bringing warmth and light
Two songs play in perfect tune
Two flowers growing into bloom
Two Doves gliding in the air
Two loves free without a care
Two parts of a loving whole
Two hearts and a single soul

3. On Marriage
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
And, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let is rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.
from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

4. Real Love
For it is in loving, as well as in being loved, that we
become most truly ourselves. No matter what we do, say,
accomplish, or become, it is our capacity to love that
ultimately defines us. In the end, nothing we do or say in
this lifetime will matter as much as the way we have loved
one another.
Daphne Rose Kingma

5. Love
A star is shining in my heart,
My dreams have wings that touch the sky,
I’d marry you a thousand times—
I’ll love you till the day I die.
Marion Schoeberlein

6. The Promise
Within this blessed union of souls
Where two hearts intertwine to become one,
There lies a promise.
Perfectly born, divinely created, and intimately shared,
It is a place where the hope and majesty of beginnings reside.
Where all things are made possible
By the astounding love shared by two spirits.
As you hold each other’s hands in this promise,
And eagerly look to the future in each other’s eyes,
May your unconditional love and devotion
Take you to places, of which you’ve both only dreamed,
Where you’ll dwell for a lifetime of happiness
Sheltered in the warmth of each other’s arms.
Heather Berry

7. Love
I love you,
Not only for what you are,
But for what I am
When I am with you.
I love you,
Not only for what
You have made of yourself,
But for what
You are making of me.
I love you
For the part of me
That you bring out;
I love you
For putting your hand
Into my heaped-up heart
And passing over
All the foolish, weak things
That you can’t help
Dimly seeing there,
And for drawing out
Into the light
All the beautiful belongings
That no one else d looked
Quite far enough to find.
I love you because you
Are helping me to make
Of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern
But a temple;
Out of the works
Of my every day
Not a reproach
But a song.
I love you
Because you have done
More than any creed
Could have done
To make me good,
And more than any fate
Could have done
To make me happy.
You have done it
Without a touch,
Without a word,
Without a sign.
You have done it
By being yourself.
Perhaps that is what
Being a friend means,
After all.
Roy Croft (1907-1973)

8. Comfort
Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe
With a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor
Measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as
They are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful
Hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping,
And then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.
Dinah Maria Mulock Craik (1826-1887)

9. Cherish Every Moment
Today is the beginning of a dream.
A day where two souls are woven together.
Cherish every moment that life offers.
And celebrate every small pleasure.
Express your love at every chance,
And allow it to unfold gracefully.
Show your devotion and dedicate your lives
To the enrichment of each other.
Strive always for honesty and integrity.
Build upon your marriage daily.
And seek to understand each other.
But above all this…
Draw upon the love you feel today
And forever etch it in your hearts.
Leslie A Neilson

10. On Your Wedding Day
In a perfect world
I would wish you a marriage
Like two mountains embracing,
Sharing the same foundation,
Lush growth intertwining wildly,
Seeds from each mountain
Germinated by the other.
In a perfect world there would be no one
Needing to blast a tunnel between you
So that a road might run through.
In a perfect world, I would wish you a marriage
Like two sea currents, parallel, yet weaving through
One another, creating whirlpools in your wake;
By your very natures immutable, enhancing
One another and letting go, empowering
Each other to be free within your union.
In a perfect world there would be no
Boulders to encircle, pulling you away, no sudden
Promontories to crash against in confusion.
But we know, this is not a perfect world.
It has to be enough that you have found one another
To share your life’s journey, enough
To cherish each other at day’s end.
So I choose to wish for you, that,
In this imperfect world, you will always have enough:
Both enough contentment and enough challenge
To hold you satisfied; enough strength to keep from
Clutching too hard so you never break the bond;
As solid as the mountains in endurance, growing together;
Enough peace to balance the heartache, the sorrow
And I wish you such joy, playful,
Limitless like the sea, replenishing
As you wind your lives around one another’s.
Love is the miracle that chose the two of you;
Remember, you two are the miracle
That will keep it always dancing.
Nita Penfold

11. Love is
Love is
Being happy for the other person
When they are happy
Being sad for the other person when they are sad
Being together in good times
And being together in bad times
Love is the source of strength.
Love is
Being honest with yourself at all times
Being honest with the other person at all time
Telling, listening, respecting the truth
And never pretending
Love is the source of reality
Love is
An understanding that is so complete that
You feel as if you area part of the other person
Accepting the other person just the way they are
And not trying to change them to be something else
Love is the source of unity
Love is the freedom to pursue your own desires
While sharing your experience with the other person
The growth of one individual along side of
And together with the growth of another individual
Love is the source of success
Love is
The excitement of planning things together
The excitement of doing things together
Love is the source of the future
Love is
The fury of the storm
The calm of the rainbow
Love is the source of passion
Love is
Giving and taking in a daily situation
Being patient with each other’s needs and desires
Love is the source of sharing
Love is knowing that the other person will always
Be with you regardless of what happens, missing the other person
When they are away but remaining near in heart al all times
Love is the source of security.
Love is the source of life.
Susan Polis Schutz

12. The Key to Love
The key to love is understanding ...
as it is the little things that say so much
by themselves.
The key to love is forgiveness ....
to accept each others faults and
pardon mistakes,
The key to love is sharing ...
Sharing and acing your good fortunes as well
as the bad, together;
both conquering problems, forever searching
for ways to intensify your happiness.
The key to love is giving ...
Giving without thought of return,
but with the hope of just a simple smile,
and by giving in but never giving up.
The key to love is respect ...
Respect realizing that you are two
separate people, with different ideas;
that you don't belong to each other,
that you belong with each other, and share a
mutual bond.
The key to love is inside us all ...
It takes time and patience to unlock all
the ingredients that will take you to its threshold;
it is the continual learning process that demands
a lot of work ...
but the rewards are more than worth the effort ...
and that is the key to love.

13. Apache Wedding Prayer
Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now you are two bodies,
But there is only one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place
To enter into the days of your togetherness
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

14. Sonnet 18 by Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st.
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st.
---So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
---So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

15. Sonnet 116 by Shakespeare
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no, it is an ever fixe’d mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand’ring barque,
Whose worth’s unknown although his height be taken.
Love’s not time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
--If this be error and upon me proved,
--I never writ, nor no man ever loved

16. Corinthians 1:1-13
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love,
I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.
And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge;
If I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that
I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, Love is not pompous,
It is not inflated, It is not rude, it does not seed its own interests,
it is not quick-tempered, It does not brood over injury.
It does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing;
If tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.
For we know partially and we prophesy partially,
But when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child,
Reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things.
At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face.
At present I know partially; then I shall know full, as I am fully known.
So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is Love.

17. What is Love?
Love is the way that our lives intertwine,
Love is the feeling of your hand in mine,
Love is each look and each meaningful touch—
The unspoken language that tells us so much…
Love is the laughter and joy that we share,
But most of all, Love is just knowing you’re there.
From the writings of Emily Matthews

18. Blessing For a Marriage
May your marriage bring you all the exquisite excitements a marriage should bring,
And may life grant you also patience, tolerance, and understanding.
May you always need one another – not so much to fill your
Emptiness, as to help you to know your fullness.
A mountain needs a valley to be complete;
The valley does not make the mountain less,
But more’ and the valley is more a valley because it has a mountain
Towering over it. So let it be with you and you.
May you need one another, but not out of weakness.
May you want one another, but not out of lack.
May you entice one another, but not compel one another.
May you embrace one another, but not out encircle one another.
May you succeed in all important ways with one another,
And not fail in the little graces.
May you look for things to praise, often say,
“I love you!” and take no notice of small faults.
If you have quarrels that push you apart, may both of you hope
To have good sense enough to take the first step back.
May you enter into the mystery which is the awareness
Of one another’s presence – no more physical than spiritual,
Warm and near when you are side by side, and warm and near
When you are in separate rooms or even distant cities.
May you have happiness, and may you find it making one another happy.
May you have love, and may you find it loving one another.
James Dillet Freeman

19. The Art of Marriage
The little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say “I love you” at least onece a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
The courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
It should continue through all the years.
It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other,
Not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice,
But the spirit of joy.
It is speaking works of appreciation and demonstrating
Gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo or the wife to have
Wings of an angel.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.
It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,
Dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.
Wilfred A. Peterson

20. Love’s Philosophy
The fountains mingle with the river,
And the rivers with the ocean;
The winds of heaven mix forever,
With a sweet emotion;
Noting in the world is single’
All things by a law divine
In one another’s being mingle;--
Why not I with thine?
Percy Bysshe Shelley
