Ira Sadoff was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 7, 1945, of Russian-Jewish ancestry. He earned a B.A. in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University in 1966 and an M.F.A. from the University of Oregon in 1968. In 1975, he published his first collection of poetry, Settling Down (Houghton Mifflin).

Since then, Sadoff has published several poetry collections, most recently Barter (University of Illinois, 2003), which delves into his personal past, specifically concerning love and bereavement, as well as the historical and global past, referencing Beethoven, Vietnam, and the fall of communism. Other recent collections include Grazing (1998), from which poems were awarded the American Poetry Review's Leonard Shestack Prize, the Pushcart Poetry Prize, and the George Bogin Memorial Prize from the Poetry Society of America; Emotional Traffic (David R. Godine, 1989); A Northern Calendar (1982), which charts the arrival and passage of the seasons; and Palm Reading in Winter (Houghton Mifflin, 1978.).

About Sadoff's work, the poet Gerald Stern has said, "Nowhere else in American poetry do I come across a passion, a cunning, and a joy greater than his. And a deadly accuracy. I see him as one of the supreme poets of his generation." And on awarding Sadoff the Bogin Memorial Prize, the poet Alan Shapiro said, "Beyond the energetic syntax and the astonishing range of idiom and tone, what I so admire in these poems is the just yet always unpredictable weaving together of individual and collective life, the insightful, almost seamless integration of personal experience in all its unredemptive anguish with the heterogeneous realities of American culture."

Sadoff is also the author of three works of prose, most recently History Matters: Contemporary Poetry on the Margins of American Culture (University of Iowa, 2009), which, through the work of poets like Czeslaw Milosz and Frank O'Hara, argues that poets live and write within history; An Ira Sadoff Reader (Middlebury, 1992), a collection of stories, poems and essays about contemporary poetry; and Uncoupling (Houghton Mifflin, 1982), a novel.

He is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. In 1973, he was a fellow at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, and in 1974, he was the Alan Collins Fellow in Poetry and Prose at the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference. His poetry has been widely anthologized, most recently in The Best American Poetry series, in 2008.

Sadoff has served as poetry editor of The Antioch Review, and was co-founder of The Seneca Review. He has taught at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and in the M.F.A. programs of the University of Virginia and Warren Wilson College.

He currently teaches in the M.F.A. program at Drew University, and serves as the Arthur Jeremiah Roberts Professor of English at Colby College, in Maine.

Childrens Poems Defination

Source(Google.com.pk)

My first children's poem -- Scrawny Tawny Skinner -- was written in 1994 after having dinner with a friend whose 4-year-old daughter did everything she could to get out of eating her dinner. Shortly after that, I wrote two more poems, My Foot Fell Asleep and Binkley. During 1995 and 1996, I wrote about three or four poems a year (including You Can Never Be Too Careful and A Meloncholy Tale, whenever the mood struck me. (All of these poems, by the way, appear in the book My Foot Fell Asleep.)

In early 1997 I decided I would like to write an entire book of children's poems. In 1998, I published my first collection of poetry, entitled My Foot Fell Asleep. I published a sequel called I've Seen My Kitchen Sink in 1999 and a third book, Sailing Off to Singapore, in 2000. The Aliens Have Landed at Our School! was published by Meadowbrook Press and is distributed by Simon and Schuster. My first collection of poems about school, When the Teacher Isn't Looking: and Other Funny School Poems was published by Meadowbrook Press in 2005. In 2006 Meadowbrook also published a of Christmas poems I co-authored with Linda Knaus entitled Santa Got Stuck in the Chimney. My newest book is another collection of funny school poems entitled Revenge of the Lunch Ladies. My next book, My Hippo Has the Hiccups: And Other Poems I Totally Made Up is coming out in spring, 2009.

My poems have also appeared in magazines, school textbooks, and numerous anthologies of funny poetry, as well as on television, audio CDs and even restaurant placemats.

I have put together this web site to share some of my poems with kids around the world. I try to post a new poem every weekday for you to read and grade, so please check back regularly to read new, funny poetry.   Who is energetic, creative, athletic and short.

Resident of Mount Air.

“Bio Poem” Example

Two poems based on Sammy by Elizabeth Ripley

Both of these poems—one a “Bio Poem,” the other an “I Am Poem”—show how poem forms can be used to assess how well students understand literary characters or historical figures. The “bio poem” and “I am poem” also make excellent pre-performance character studies for students who may be acting out a character from literature or poetry.

Sammy
Naughty, happy, hungry, and sly
Son of Mommy
Lover of fun, jam, and mom
Who feels motivated, happy, and guilt-free
Who needs jam, bread, and a chair to stand on

Resident of The Kitchen
Jaminsky

“I Am Poem” Example

Mommy of Sammy by Elizabeth Ripley
I am a harried mom in a heckuva hurry.
I wonder why my son can’t stay out of trouble.
I hear huge lips smacking in the kitchen.
I see mounds of jam everywhere.
I want a vacation!
I am a harried mom in a heckuva hurry.
I pretend not to find my child annoying.
I touch my child’s sticky sweet face.
I worry that he will wipe his face on my new curtains.
I cry to think he won’t be a child forever.
I am a harried mom in a heckuva hurry.
I understand that children will make messes.
I say, Sammy! Don’t make yourself jammy.
(I say, I’m thankful that we’ve food to eat at all.)
I dream of the day that Sammy becomes self-cleaning.
I try to remember that this is just a phase.
I hope when I am old, my son will clean up after me.
I am a harried mom in a heckuva hurry

  The annual poppy symbols flaunt
Perennial sorrow;
Gratitude pride will not vaunt
Tomorrow.

I leave the cenotaph,
Here, between tide and tide,
With weed-cerements, green bands,
Drift-water, reveal the wrack
To remember them, laughing, young,
To remember the pubs, the dances, the drink,
To recall the clean, boy-faces, so resigned
But not the blood of battles, the stench,
Nor even the sight of the steel-torn guts
And how they prayed as the Padre prayed
Here, with the spume-flecked waves
Namur King
*Nissen huts - corrugated iron clad huts widely used by the army in Second World War. Quonset huts (in US).
NAMUR KING 1915-68
NAMUR KING 1915-68
You saw, you felt, you knew full well, as friend and foe were taken
It was for each other, through shot and shell, the madness you endured
We cannot know, we were not there, it's beyond our comprehension
For far too many, no long life ahead, free of struggle and pain and the gun
I do not know your name, but I know you died

The unctuous adulation of the cleric;
I crave sea-silences, to laugh,
Or to be sick!

In the place of dead men's bones,
Here, where the grey gulls glide
And the wind moans;

In pools of the ebb-tide flow,
With froth of spume on wetted sands
Like snow.

And the wreckage of wars;
Outward go, then, inevitably back,
While I pause

Remember the tales they told,
The lewd jokes, the songs that were sung,
Of old.

(Left, but a little time),
The women, seduced with a wink
And a gin and lime!

On embarkation day;
The saddened girls whom they left behind
In the family way!

And the screaming fears;
Not the grovelling down in a shallow trench,
Or the tears;

And the mangled limbs....
Nor the Church Parade behind Nissen huts*
Singing hymns;

For the Proven Cause;
Proud, perhaps, of the part they played....
And I pause

Of the endless tide,
To forget the rows of regimented graves
Where brave men died.

NAMUR KING was born in Blackwood (South Wales) on the day British Army won the battle at the Belgian town of Namur. Hence the name. (5 of his brothers all named John had previously died of TB.)
In 1939, at 24 years old, he volunteered for the British Expeditionary Force to France. he saw action as dispatch rider and driver, coming under enemy fire. He was evacuated at Dunkirk.
Subsequently he was stationed in the Falkland Islands, as S. America was under threat of Japanese attack.I do not know your name, but I know you died
I do not know from where you came, but I know you died

Your uniform, branch of service, it matters not to me
Whether Volunteer or Conscript, or how it came to be
That politicians' failures, or some power-mad ambition
Brought you too soon to your death, in the name of any nation

By bloody death, that your life too, was forfeit and forsaken
Yet on you went and fought and died, in your close and private hell
For Mate or Pal or Regiment and memories never to tell

Side by side, through wound and pain, and comradeship assured
No family ties, or bloodline link, could match that bond of friend
Who shared the horror and kept on going, at last until the end

To know the toll that battle brings, of resolute intention
To carry on, day by day, for all you loved and hoped for
To live in peace a happy life, away from bloody war

And we must remember the price that was paid, by each and every one
Regardless of views, opinions aside, no matter how each of us sees it
They were there and I cannot forget, even though I did not live it

I do not know from where you came, but I know you died.

All of these photos were taken in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada. I put this collection together with inspiring quotes to lift the spirits of those who are struggling or for those who need courage. When I am stressed I visualize the cresting waves rolling in to shore and the stress melts away. As a Maritimer my life has been intimately wrapped up with the Bay of Fundy, Northumberland Strait, and Five Islands. In the summer we swam in the Bay and the Strait and would make a trip to take pictures of Five Islands. As residents of Atlantic Canada, we are surrounded by seascapes, marshes, and verdant pasture lands. Many people feel that Atlantic Canada is one of the most desirable places to live in the world. I hope that you will find beauty and comfort in this book.

The Spiritual Sound
By Jasmine K. Lewis

The Spiritual Sound is a collection of spiritual poems all written at a time in my life where the world seemed like a dark and sinister place. When the world was an upside down place to be in and where I was afraid all the time. It is through my pain and troubles that I found God right beside me the whole time being a guiding light out of the darkness. I believe that God allowed me the beautiful gift of writing to share my experiences with people just like me who suffer for the kingdom of Heaven. People who truly know what it feels like and means to serve God with your whole heart no matter the cost. It is my greatest and deepest desire that this book inspires someone to call on God and accepts Him into their life. I want no more to influence people to always put God first in their everyday lives because you can't go wrong with doing this very thing. Remember all things are possible with God (Matthew 19:26) but without Him there are impossible.

 Long Poems Defination

 Source(Google.com.pk)
 Poiseidon's waters roil and roar
All up and down the craggy coast;
Their winedark waves have brought the host
Of foreign men all drunk for glory,
For the sake of one man's vanity
They traveled to your alien shore
To write with blood and bone a story
Of the Gods' capriciousness towards men,
Of passion's triumph over sanity
Which they shall repeat: again, again.

The men will surge against your city walls
Ten long and doleful years;
As your children, born to violence, shriek, and widows' tears
Appeal to you, their hero Prince,
To drive them back to whence they came
As your father walks the palace halls,
As does his shade now, ever since -
Ever since you went out to face the foe
And pass to time your noble name,
Their legend and their martyr, hope and woe.

It would be asked by what Creed you chose to live
Before you fell to the Fates' perversity,
Before their undeserving Champion dragged you 'round the city.
"Honor the Gods", you said, cruel though they may be.
"Defend your Country", you said, though it be doomed.
"Love your Women", you said, as only they can give
Meaning to the madness from across the sea.
Your father forced to beg for your battered corpse; so many dead,
Their faces still now, 'neath the swaying plumes
Of shining helmets, others waiting in their stead.

     "Honor the Gods
       Defend your Country
       Love your women."

- Oh you grey heads who start your wars for Pride,
Go ask Andromache's ghost
What it meant to her.

I noticed the uniform, and the heavy soled shinny black boots
Not the man within it, I apologized.

I remember the clean fresh smell of maleness, as they stormed into the house,
Broken glass, ripped down hangings, a slashed sofa, a pulled curtain,
A sudden maneuver to throw my brother’s bear across the yard,
Such military worries, hidden bombs in a child’s best friend.
Your broken cross I buried in our garden after they left.God, come back to my house, I am
waiting.

All I saw were figures painted the colour of grass and bark,
with gilded edges traced by some crazed church painter's brush,
faceless with pockets full of bullets and chords,
Their arms intertwined with red eyes and swollen hands of my teachers,
Stiff figures against the soft jeans, sweaters, and knitted hats below.
Standing witness in the yard above watching, I waited for her to die.

Shinny black like the dirt dug from the mass grave,
Full of crumbled human bits, decaying coloured cloth,
while the sun scorched the group sorting the cellular samples
I saw the black boots etched into the bone fragments.
Lost bones of lost loved ones from empty families,

Standing in the desert, I wait for a name.

No, I do not see you the man, just the uniform.
I see the butt of the gun, the dent of the boot, the slickness in the air,
the cruel power of the swirl jungle green print with gold trim.
As a witness God left me, and I was waiting.

Change, let me meet the man,

maybe the waiting is over.

I know i have kept a lot from you.
I know its not fair.
I know i should tell you.
I know i have to tell you.

Maybe i can tell you some, but not all.
Maybe i can keep it secret just a little longer.
Maybe i can hide it from you more.
Maybe i can get the guts to tell you everything.

Everyday, i wanna tell you.
Everyday, i hope i get the guts to tell you.
Everyday, i feel bad for not telling you.
Everyday i think about you.

Sometimes, i dont want to tell you.
Sometimes, i just want you to know it all.
Sometimes, i wish i never knew you.
Sometimes, i wish you were all mine.

If i had the guts, i would tell you everything.
If i had the guts, i would tell you how much you mean to me.
If i had the guts, i would tell you your the only reason im alive.
If i had the guts, i would tell you my biggest secret.

Just knowing that i love you.
Just knowing that you may or may not love me back.
Just knowing that i care.
Just knowing that you probably dont.

Breaks my heart.
Breaks my soul.
Breaks my dreams.
Breaks my life.

If i had you, my life would be complete.
If i had you, my life would be perfect.
If i had you, i would be happy.
If i had you, i wouldnt have to search anymore.

I know i should tell you.
I know its not fair.
I know i have kept a lot from you.
I know i should tell you.

But, i dont have the guts,
The guts to tell you i love you,
The guts to tell you your the reason im alive,
The guts to tell you,

I need you in my life.

Mothers day Poems Defination

 My Mother
My mother is so sweet
Sweeter than all sweets you eat'
She is gentle and kind
and works by using her mind.
Her ears are sharp like a knife
and she is a perfect wife.
If someone is in need, oh dear
My sweet mother is always there.
Hena Dhawan

Love Everlasting
My Mother is charming,
Her food is Enchanting,
But her love is everlasting.

If my mother wasn't living,
I would go to her like her sibling,
Ask her for her love,
In the Seven Heavens high above.

My mother's balmy,
Not because she is my mummy,
but because of her love,
The everlasting feathers of a dove.

A love Everlasting,
Is by a mother who is a darling,
Whoever has a mother like me,
Has a wish-to-be!
Contributed By: Mary

Mommy I Love You
Mommy, I love you
For all that you do.
I'll kiss you and hug you
'Cause you love me, too.
You feed me and need me
To teach you to play,
So smile 'cause I love you
On this Mother's Day.
Nicholas Gordon

This One Is For Grandmothers!
Grandmothers are mothers who are grand,
Restoring the sense that our most precious things
Are those that do not change much over time.
No love of childhood is more sublime,
Demanding little, giving on demand,
More inclined than most to grant the wings
On which we fly off to enchanted lands.
Though grandmothers must serve as second mothers,
Helping out with young and restless hearts
Each has all the patience wisdom brings,
Remembering our passions more than others,
Soothing us with old and well-honed arts.
Nicholas Gordon

I Love You Mother
I Love You Mother
You are so special and kind
And I love you so
You helped to build my mind
And I want you to know.
The thought of you by me
Just makes me smile.
We are so close
Forever and not just a while.
I appreciate you mother
And I love all your style.
Nicole Ruddock

God's Gift
My Mother is a special gift,
A special gift that God gave to me.
I'd be lost and lonely without her,
If God took her away you see.
I love her so very much,
That I couldn't bear to live without her healing touch.
Thank-you God for giving me such a loving Mother,
For I wouldn't want to be a part of no other.
Melanie Reid

Untitled-1
A halo that reflects a life of
wisdom, kindness,and caring.
Eyes that sparkle with pride
and show how much she believes in you.
Shoulders that have been slept on
and wept on and
carried a world or two.
Arms that never run out of hugs.
Hands that know
just when to hold on
and when to let go.
A mind filled with amazing things,
from fairy tales to family tails
and long-ago stories of you.
A smile that can jump right into your heart
and warm you faster than hot chocolate.
A heart of gold
that holds more love
than you can possibly imagine.

We only have One Mom, One Mommy,
One Mother in this World, One life.
Don't wait for the Tomorrow's
to tell Mom, you love her

Untitled-3
The things I never told you I'd like to tell you now;
Of feelings held contentedly inside my heart to swell;
Of thoughts and dreams, wants and happiness too;
A Mother's prayer to finally share with you.
Lord, govern their lives as you have mine,
Touch them with Your sweet divine,
Make them happy, guide their paths,
Tickle their funny bones, let me hear their laughs.
Dry the tears sliding down their faces,
Hold their hands when the love heart races,
Make them stand tall when the burdens are great,
Prepare them to carry the loads of fate.
Heal the hurts and sufferings of the spirit,
Make them listen until they hear it;
That sweet song of yours that will touch their soul
And carry them forward until they are old.
Lord, let them see the meaning of life,
Protect them from the evils of strife,
Gently guide them in the path of your ways,
I pray, Lord, I pray for them everyday.
I know, Lord, that I fell short many times;
In my guidance as "Mom" there were crimes,
Times that I failed to help them see
The beauty that you have bestowed around me.
Take their hands and lead them forward
Give them strength to avoid the coward
And evil ones that lurk about
Waiting` to swallow them up and shout
The conquest of their gentle soul
Provide them the coin to pass the toll.
Please make things right, Lord, once again
To help them to see the meaning of friend
And loved ones that hold them close to the heart
With a Mother that loves them, never apart.

Thank God for our Mothers
If life were without water, where would we be?
If life were without mothers,
There would be no you or me.
We all need to take hold, of how precious life really is,
and not take for granted the gift of love and the ability to give.
Thank you to God for creating us all
For giving us our mothers
So we can stand proud and tall.
Humans are no accident, no mistake or error
We sometimes live our lives in fear of this,
Even to the point of terror.
But when the truth is told, and recognised by all,
God does not create rubbish. He knew what he was doing when he created
me and you, but the best gift of all, is giving us loving, caring
Mothers who love us unconditionally through and through.
None of us are perfect, that includes ourselves and family.
Hold onto how precious we are and thank God for our mothers.
Amen
Julia Hunt

Hi mom,
I have sent you this poem for Mother's Day to say how much I love you. Hope you will like it!
I miss you
When we're not together.
I'm growing up so fast
See how big I've gotten
since you saw me last?
As I grow, I'll change a lot,
The years will fly right by.
You'll wonder how I grew so quick
when and where and why?
So save this card in a safe place,
And take it out each year.
The memories will come back of me,
When I was small and dear.
Love ya!!
From your daughter Vanesit
Miss You Mom as i Grow
I miss you
When we're not together.
I'm growing up so fast
See how big I've gotten
since you saw me last?
As I grow, I'll change a lot,
The years will fly right by.
You'll wonder how I grew so quick
when and where and why?
So save this card in a safe place,
And take it out each year.
The memories will come back of me,
When I was small and dear.
Love you!!
Christin
Love to you Grandma
Love to you Grandma on Mother's Day,
May lots of happiness come your way.
I love you Grandma with all my heart,
I loved you from the very start.
At Grandma's house I love to stay,
She always lets me have my way.
I sit and listen about her youth,
I bet dear Grandma, you were real cute.
So - today, have lots of fun,
From the very start, till the day is done.

The Sweetest Mother
Our mother is the sweetest and
most delicate of all.
She knows more of paradise
than angels can recall.
She's not only beautiful
but passionately young,
Playful as a kid, yet wise
as one who has lived long.
Her love is like the rush of life,
A bubbling, laughing spring
That runs through all like liquid light
And makes the mountains sing.

You shall never go away
I think of you all day
I love you so much
that I just can't leave you alone
no, no, no.
never will
never will.
Mum you are so brilliant
you clean
you work
you cook me lovely dinner
and it's not just that,
that I love you with all my heart.
You will never go away
I just can't leave you for one single day.
You are so cool
you never embarrass me
and you never will
never will.
I love you so I want you to know I'll always be right here!
I love you mum
